Now Christmas wouldn't feel like Christmas without the smell of ginger breadmen wafting through your home. For me and a friend this has become a Christmas tradition that we do together and I love it! We arn't as skilled as those on the Great British Bake Off and bake without a recipe to follow so we used on from janespatisserie.com and it worked a treat.
So what you'll need is...
– 375g Plain Flour
– 1tsp Bicarbonate of Soda
– 3tsps Ground Ginger
– 120g Unsalted Butter, cold, cubed
– 175g Light Brown Sugar
– 5tbsps Golden Syrup
– 1 Large Egg, beaten
– Coloured Writing Gels/Royal Icing
And now for the fun to begin!!
Step one is too add the flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger and the butter to the bowl – rub together with your fingers until it resembles bread crumbs! This bit does get a little messy, yaayy!!
Step 2 is to add the rest of the ingredients so thats the sugar, golden syrup and egg – beat with a spatula or your hands (there already messy anyway!) until it is a smooth dough and this step takes a short minute but it'll form, trust me...
Step 3 is where your creation will come to life! You want to sprinkle your work surface with a little flour and bring out your dough. Then roll, roll, roll until they are as thin or thick as you like. Now to cut out your gingerbread men! We went for some other Christmas themed cutouts with trees and stars and even a Micky Mouse head.
To bake Jane recommends 190C/180C Fan for 10 - 11 minutes.
Once cooled you want to decorate..I looked on Pinterest were there are some FABBBBBB ideas where the decorations look really stunning. It's safe to say they turned out nothing like them, but if you've got the knack with icing then I'm truly very jealous!
So there are a few burned edges where we forgot to set a timer, and soooome of the decorations may need you to squint to make out their shape but hey-ho! It's about the taking part and not what they look like....right?!!
Let me know what your baking this Christmas!
